Opioid Resources and Events in January 2018

A recent article from the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) described State Opioid Response Plans that have been developed by nine states to address opioid use disorder in 2018. Some statewide goals include focusing on prevention of opioid misuse, supporting those affected by opioid misuse, and expanding access to treatment. Proposed strategies include establishing limitations for those receiving an opioid prescription for the first time, enacting good Samaritan laws in the event of overdose, providing incentives for students to become behavioral health providers, and adding more coverage for behavioral health services. In addition to these recommendations, there several substance use focused webinars taking place in January. Individualized Treatment and Understanding the Non-pharmacologic Components that are Part of Recovery is a webinar from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine that will discuss the non-pharmacologic facets of recovery. This webinar will feature guest speakers Dr. Roberto Gonzalez and Lindsey Silva who will describe their experiences starting a new treatment facility. This webinar will take place on January 9, 2018 from 10:00- 11:00am EST. Strategies to Combat Opioid Use in Rural Communities, a webinar from the Rural Health Research Gateway, will feature John Gale, MS, of the University of Southern Maine who will discuss strategies that communities can use to combat opioid use disorder.
