Macronutrient intake and oxidative stress/inflammation in type 1 diabetes

The association of oxidative stress and inflammation with diabetes, both type 1 and type 2, has been established for a long time.1 –6 Thus, increased lipid peroxidation with an increase in TBARS was the first evidence of oxidative stress.7,8 The occurrence of oxidative damage to DNA and protein carbonylation in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes was first described by Dandona et al.9 One of the known mechanisms related to the in duction of oxidative stress and inflammation is macronutrient intake, especially carbohydrates and fats.
