ASA physical status classification of obstructive sleep apnoea disease
The American Society of Anaesthesiologists' (ASA) physical status classification is a subjective marker of patients' preoperative health status; and a predictor of perioperative outcome [1]. However, it has inter-rater variability [2,3,4]. The classification highlights many examples of morbidities for each class, but does not mention obstructive sleep apnoea. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a morbidity that is prevalent and associated with perioperative complications [5]. Preoperative assessment of OSA patients may vary among clinicians.
