Optimal blood pressure level and acute kidney injury after gastrointestinal surgery

In recent article by Wu and colleagues [1] determining effects of the intraoperative mean arterial pressure (MAP) control levels on the occurrences of acute kidney injury (AKI) after gastrointestinal surgery in elderly patients with chronic hypertension, they showed that controlling intraoperative MAP to 80 to 95mmHg can decrease the incidence of postoperative AKI. Other than the limitations described in their discussion, we note other issues of this study design making interpretation of their findings questionable.
