Steroids don ’t work for back pain

Patients with lower back pain often receive steroid injections to relieve their discomfort, but a new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine finds the effects are temporary at best. Severe low back pain is usually related to herniated disk or spinal stenosis (spinal canal narrowing). A review of 38 published studies found there is no strong evidence for using steroids for pain caused by either a herniated disk or spinal canal narrowing.
