Are you addicted to what you love to eat?

Researchers have wondered if we can become addicted to foods for a long time, citing reports of people losing control over how much they eat and experiencing withdrawal when they can ’t have what they want. Now a study of 120 undergraduates at the University of Michigan and nearly 400 adults confirms that there are problematic foods that are difficult to stop eating, much like drugs. Erica Schulte, graduate student of psychology at the university and lead author, stated, “In a similar manner that drugs are processed to increase their addictive potential, this study provides insight that highly processed foods may be intentionally manufactured to be particularly rewarding through the addition of fat and refined carbohydrates, like white flour and sugar.”
