Latin American research in rabbit transmitted zoonoses at the beginning of the “Rabbit Plan” in Venezuela: ¿Are we prepared for a new outbreak?

Among many wildlife species, Oryctolagus cuniculus play an important role in the transmission of multihost pathogens. This specie was introduced in the Americas hundreds of years ago, representing today a relevant reservoir for a great variety of zoonotic pathogens in our region such as Yersinia pestis and Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, among others [1 –4]. The prevalence of these pathogens have not been well described in our region, however there are reports that indicate a high burden of disease in rabbit farms causing significant economic losses and interfering in the research processes [5].
