A cross ‐sectional analysis of chikungunya arthritis patients 22‐months post‐infection demonstrate no detectable viral persistence in synovial fluid

ConclusionsThis is one of the largest observational studies involving synovial fluid analysis of chikungunya arthritis patients. Synovial fluid analysis revealed no detectable CHIKV. This finding suggests that CHIKV may cause arthritis through induction of potential host autoimmunity suggesting a role for immunomodulating medications in the treatment of CHIKV arthritis or that low‐level viral persistence exists in synovial tissue only that is undetectable in synovial fluid. This article is protected by copyright.
