A Capabilities Approach to Environmental Impact on Nursing Home Resident Quality of Life

Nursing homes are the major provider of intermediate and long-term care outside the hospital setting for individuals whose physical or cognitive impairments limit their capacity for self-care ( Kane& Kane, 1995 ). Nursing home residents need assistance with activities of daily living as well as medical care; they are no longer able to maintain their quality of life within the community. Nevertheless, control over daily decision making remains an important aspect of residents' quality of life; self-empowerment within the home's environment remains important despite the need for assistance
