Acute Annular Outer Retinopathy

A 26-year-old Chinese woman presented with a rapid onset temporal visual field defect in her left eye. She denied photopsia. Her visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes. Fundus examination of her left eye showed a well-demarcated annular band of yellowish-white deep retinal opacification that surrounded the optic disc (Fig 1A). Spectral-domain OCT showed an absence of photoreceptors (Fig 1C-D) in the zone of retina encompassed by this ring and corresponded to her absolute visual field defect. Autofluorescence imaging showed hyper-autofluorescence in general and scattered granular hypo-autofluorescence within the affected area (Fig 1C-D).
