Recent data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) demonstrates no improvement in U.S. blood pressure control rates

As part of their Heathy People 2020 project the U.S. government Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) set a goal that at least 61.2% of Americans with hypertension be controlled by the year 2020.1 In 2010 when this goal was announced it seemed quite attainable. The previous decade had seen a steady  increase in national blood pressure control rates. In 1999-2000 the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) determined that the U.S. blood pressure control rate was 31.6%, and by 2009-2010 the rate of blood pressure control had increased to 53.1%.
