Middle ear polyps: traction avulsion after a lateral approach to the ear canal

Middle ear polyps in cats are relatively common benign masses that arise from the mucosal lining of the middle ear, Eustachian tube, or the nasopharynx. Whereas many cats will not demonstrate any specific clinical signs associated with middle ear polyps, extension of the polyps beyond the boundaries of the middle ear leads to signs of otitis externa, otitis interna, or nasopharyngitis. Diagnosis of polyps is relatively straightforward when polyps have protruded into the ear canal or into the nasopharynx where they can easily be demonstrated using otoscopy and nasopharyngoscopy.
