The impact of iatrogenic glottic atresia due to photodynamic therapy for laryngeal cancer: A report of two cases

A 43-year-old male patient presented to an ear, nose, and throat physician complaining of having suffered from a hoarse voice for the past several months. He was diagnosed with T2 N0 M0 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) via laryngomicro-surgery, and referred to our department for PDT. At the initial visit, endoscopic examination revealed a tumor in both anterior vocal cords extending to the subglottis (Fig. 1a), but there were no lymph node metastases. He underwent the first PDT session (porfimer sodium 2.0mg/kg, laser light 100J/cm2, the drug and light dose that we routinely use), and post-irradiative recovery was uneventful.
