Solitary soft tissue Langerhans cell histiocytosis of the neck. Cytohistological correlation and review of the literature

In this paper, we highlight the importance of the cytomorphologic findings for the diagnosis of LCH. The majority of published data on LCH describes secondary soft tissue involvement in patients with osseous LCH. In our case, the cytomorphologic features of the cells identified on the fine needle aspiration smears were the most important tool for suspecting LCH on this 38 year old female patient who was treated with antibiotics for chronic otitis without improvement. The cell block slides of the concurrent core biopsy of the soft tissue failed to reveal the characteristic features of the Langerhans cells despite the presence of eosinophils in the background
