The Challenge of Detecting Glaucoma Progression

Determining whether a patient's glaucoma is stable or if the disease is worsening is one of the most frequent analyses ophthalmologists perform in clinical practice. Arriving at the correct answer to this question is critically important because a failure to lower the intraocular pressure when the disease is worsening can result in avoidable adverse consequences for the patient's vision-related quality of life. Conversely, an incorrect determination that progression has occurred can lead to unnecessary intensification of treatment.
