Latest Guidelines for Hypertension: Adopt and Adapt

The latest guidelines for hypertension evaluation and management published in this issue of JASH(1) represent a major contribution to the protection of public health. A distinguishing dimension of the just released new guidelines is the reclassification of hypertension (conveniently labeled as “categories of blood pressure”). A systolic blood pressure (SBP) level of 130-139 mm Hg, previously categorized as “pre-hypertension” in JNC 8 (2), is now assigned in the new guidelines as “Stage 1” hypertension.
