Solution for Irish border must be found, says BVA

A significant number of vet graduates from Northern Ireland are trained in the Republic of Ireland, and losing these following Brexit would have serious implications for the veterinary profession. This was the warning from Simon Doherty, BVA junior vice president, at a BVA Northern Ireland dinner last week. He explained that 30,000 people are cross-border workers in Ireland, with a significant number of veterinary surgeons with practices that straddle the border. He urged the government to guarantee the existing rights of all non-UK EU vets and vet nurses living, studying and working in the UK following Brexit. In the speech, which was delivered to 70 guests, Doherty outlined the veterinary profession’s recommendations to ensure standards of animal health and welfare are maintained in Northern Ireland.
