Welfare and conservation of UK wildlife

Recently, I have increasingly enjoyed the wide and more controversial range of subjects covered in Veterinary Record. In a recent editorial (VR, October 21, 2017, vol 181, p 410), Adele Waters raised some of the important issues and even sacred cows that are often kept out of sight. She raised the problems there are in bringing together the vets with wide differences in their motivation and concepts of animal welfare. This is relevant to both individuals and different areas of the profession. She quoted from the authoritative address given by Alick Simmons, former deputy chief veterinary officer, at the recent British Veterinary Zoological Society conference ‘Who owns the Countryside?’. During this address, he concentrated on the importance of vets finding common ground in their approaches to animal welfare and conservation in the widest possible sense.
