Medication management by informal caregivers – Under-recognized and under-supported

Two recent studies published in Research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy highlight the vital but under-recognized role of informal caregivers in performing medication management activities for older people.1,2 Medication management is one of the most common and complex medical tasks performed by informal caregivers.1 Look and Stone conducted four focus groups with 29 caregivers and identified a range of direct and indirect medication management activities provided by caregivers.1 Noureldin and Plake analyzed data from the United States National Health and Aging Trends Study and the National Study of Caregiving, and found two-thirds of family caregivers were involved in medication management activities.
