In conclusion, P. gingivalis both triggers and suppresses the immune response in HGFs. Consequently, we suggest that the pathogenic effects of P. gingivalis, and especially the activity of the gingipains on the inflammatory and immune response of HGFs, are crucial in periodontitis.
