Progress in Pediatric Cardiology: SI Pediatric VAD

The use of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) in the form of ventricular assist devices (VAD) has evolved from purely a heroic measure to an established therapy for end stage heart failure refractory to maximal medical support. The advent of smaller implantable devices designed for and tested in adults, but applicable for use in children, has heralded a significant expansion in device utilization and shift towards earlier device use in less critically ill children as a bridge to transplantation.
