VP2 Update: Greetings from Haraa!

We get to Haraa by driving up. Not up some and then down some. Just up. We arrived at the top of a mountain that would be our new home for the summer. At first we could not speak while we walked around the village – the seemingly monstrous hills took our breath while leaving us with only a grunt here and there. The “shortcuts” were even worse. Perhaps the translation is off because we thought shortcut meant short and easy! However, in just two weeks we’ve fallen in love with this place, and everything about it, including our epic hikes to get just about anywhere! What’s more, each of us has found something of our own in Haraa. Rashidi’s found his spot as a hot shot on the football (soccer) team – the guys are probably already trying to recruit him permanently from Babati. Kelsey has a steady gig making guacamole for her homestay Baba who is gaga for the stuff ever since she introduced this new use for avocados (which are quite plentiful here in Haraa). Olivia is a celebrity in the primary school (standard 6-7 classroom) after whipping out her secret talent as a rapper. She gets a lot of “nipetanos” (fist bumps) as she strolls the streets of Haraa. Hannah is most likely to be found having a thumb war with someone between the ages of 2 and 18. Since her swahili conversation capabilities are restricted to “do you like [point at object]” and words from the lion king (i.e. Hakuna Matata, no worries), she started teachin...
