Hello from Bonga Village!

Greetings from the SIC volunteers in Bonga Village! Our team, self-proclaimed the Bonga Blue, includes Kimmi, Emily W., Nicko, Zach, Emmy and Hannah Mac. We have been hard at work the past two weeks, as we’ve been reaching out to the many different community and student groups Bonga has to offer. There are two primary and two secondary schools in addition to the three churches, two mosques, and the clinic. Bonga is a busy village where all sorts of people from around the area come to go to market, to seek treatment at the clinic, and to attend school – as it is where the only two secondary schools are located in the ward. So far, the people have been incredibly receptive to our teachings. We already have two testing days planned for the village, with the first coming up this week at the local secondary boarding school. The Bonga Blue has spent a large portion of its time Hayatul Islamic Secondary School, which currently houses over 500 students. Our lessons with these classes have been highly entertaining, and the kids have treated us like rock stars. The female volunteers were practically smothered with hugs after one of our first teachings. The members of the community have been receptive and welcoming as well. As we walk around the village throughout the day, we attract a flock of children wherever we go. They latch on to our hands or yell “good morning” at all times of day, we often reciprocate with “tano” (five) and fist-bump the eager children. The sligh...
