Evaluation of the performance of a new automated HIV combination assay

In 1997, combination assays, termed “fourth-generation” EIAs, which detect both HIV-1 p24 antigen (Ag) and antibodies (Ab), became available in Europe, allowing the detection of early as well as established infections [1]. Since this time, more than 10 different fourth-generation assays have been licensed in Europe. These combinat ion assays reduce the seroconversion window period by 4–8days when compared to third generation EIAs, which only detect HIV antibodies [2,3].
