Shekhawat et  al (p. 1496) conducted a cohort study to examine the effects of first eye versus second eye cataract surgery on visual function and quality of life. The researchers studied 328 patients undergoing separate first eye and second eye cataract surgeries at 5 Veterans Affairs centers in the United Stat es. They found that second eye surgery resulted in higher postoperative National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire scores compared with first eye surgery. First eye surgery was associated with significantly greater improvement in visual function scores, but patient-reported visual function improved significantly after second-eye surgery, and both first and second eye surgery resulted in similar improvements in socioemotional quality of life scores.
