HIGH CMV IgG ANTIBODY LEVELS ARE ASSOCIATED TO A LOWER CD4+ RESPONSE TO ANTIRETROVIRAL THERAPY IN HIV-INFECTED WOMEN

In sub-Saharan Africa the great majority of women are infected with cytomegalovirus (CMV) [1]. CMV infection has been shown to have a significant impact on HIV disease course: in one study CMV infection was associated with an increased risk of severe non-AIDS-defining events in a large cohort of HIV-infected patients [2]; recently, levels of specific CMV IgG have been shown to be associated with disease progression and immune activation in untreated women in Uganda [3]. Studies have been also performed to evaluate the impact of CMV infection on lymphocytes.
