Editorial commentary: Death after acute myocardial infarction, possible to predict?

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and across the globe. Given the extensive number of people affected each year [1], attempts to predict which patients are at elevated risk of adverse outcomes have been a mainstay of clinical care for decades. As aptly noted by Castro-Dominguez and co-authors in the current edition of Trends in Cardiovascular Medicine, the primary aim of such predictions is to inform prognosis and guide treatment decisions [2].
