Hand hygiene in an era of healthcare complexity and antimicrobial resistance

Among all infection prevention and control strategies, good hand hygiene practice is recognized as the most cost-effective one. The significance of hand hygiene in patient care and safety was conceptualized in the early 19th century. Since then, a pool of scientific evidence supported the observation that if properly implemented, hand hygiene alone can significantly reduce the risk of cross-transmission of infection in healthcare facilities [1].
