Normal Uric Acid Levels in Nascent Metabolic Syndrome Patients residing in Northern California

The Metabolic Syndrome (Met S) predisposes to an increased risk for both diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (1). In patients with nascent Met S defined by the absence of diabetes or clinical CVD we have shown in a series of papers that these patients have impaired endothelial progenitor cells function, increased oxidative stress, increased inflammation manifest by both circulating and cellular biomediators and dysregulation of adipose tissue biology (2-5). Whilst hyperuricemia is not an accepted criterion for the diagnosis of Met S many have suggested that serum uric acid (SUA) levels are uniformly elevated (6-7).
