Pain management: The combined patient and provider perspective

I recently had the opportunity to experience acute post-surgical pain from the perspective of both the patient and being a provider and prescriber. Through this experience I was reminded of three major tidbits that I wanted to share. My pain was following an esophagectomy and involved the placement of multiple chest tubes as well as a thoracotomy and abdominal incision. While one can't really remember pain once it has resolved, I know that the pain was acute, persistent and impacted movement such that treatment was needed.
