National guidelines endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the United States Preventive Task Force recommend that all health care providers provide smoking cessation counseling at each visit and patient encounter.1 Patients with a compromised vascular system who smoke are at increased risk for major complications after angioplasty or surgical bypass. Smoking cessation has been shown to improve bypass graft patency and limit the risk of major limb amputation.2,3 Current guidelines recommend an approach that includes physician advice, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), and longitudinal counseling from a free, telephone-based quitline.
