Robotic Surgery: Risks vs. Rewards

A 66-year-old man was seen for difficulty urinating and was diagnosed by biopsy with localized prostate cancer. The urologist recommended a radical prostatectomy and stated that the best and safest way to remove the prostate was with minimally invasive robotic surgery. The urologist explained the procedure and said that robotic surgery allows smaller incisions, better control of the instruments, lower risk of complications, and faster return of erectile function.
