Simulation-Based Training: Malignant Hyperthermia

Health care providers abide by the creed “first, do no harm,”1 yet statistics suggest that medical errors are the third leading cause of mortality in the United States, resulting in approximately 250,000 deaths each year.2,3 In fact, one analysis found that a hospital stay is as dangerous as bungee jumping or motorcycle racing, based o n the number of deaths per year that result from these activities.4 The discrepancy between these statistics and the “first, do no harm” principle demonstrates a clear gap between the ideal of safe, quality health care and the actual care that is delivered; the Institute of Medicine described th at gap as a “chasm” in 2001.
