Assessment of Osteoporosis Fracture Risk
Osteoporosis-related fractures (low-trauma, low-impact, fragility) are associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and health-care expenditure worldwide. In the absence of a defining fracture, the diagnosis of osteoporosis is based on the World Health Organization's T-score criteria (less than or equal to −2.5) by central dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Using the World Health Organization's diagnostic criteria, greater than 50% of patients who sustain a low-trauma fracture have a T-score above the diagnostic threshold for osteoporosis.
