Response from the author on “An Intervention to Improve the Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection Rate in a Medical Intensive Care Unit: Direct Observation of Catheter Insertion Procedure”

The incidence of urinary tract infections caused by indwelling catheters has reached almost two million cases per year in the United States and has healthcare costs skyrocketing (Gray, 2010; Vacca and Angelos, 2013). Catheter associated urinary tract infections and resulting complications lead to a significant increase in patient morbidity and mortality. (Leone et al., 2003). For these reasons, evidence-based research activities that address the reduction of CAUTI are needed. The authors of the research article: An Intervention to Improve the Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection Rate in a Medical Intensive Care Unit: Direct Observation of Catheter Insertion Procedure appreciate the interest and feedback on this quality improvement study.
