Introduction

This issue of Seminars in Perinatology is intended as an update regarding factors related to the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of sexual differentiation (DSD) including historical perspectives, psychological aspects, current surgical approach, importance of establishing a genetic diagnosis, and pertinent legal aspects to consider when treating patients with a DSD. Finally, a pragmatic approach to the newborn with genital ambiguity is presented. The focus of this volume is to relate these current issues to those involved in the care of patients with DSD at birth and during infancy.
