Sudden cardiac death in the young

Sudden cardiac death in the young is a devastating event for everyone concerned, including immediate relatives and the wider community. Among older persons, coronary artery disease is the most frequent cause of sudden cardiac death, whereas among those aged 1 to 35 years, sudden cardiac death is more often caused by conditions which have an underlying genetic basis. Among these are the primary arrhythmogenic disorders (including the long-QT syndromes, catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia and Brugada syndrome) and the cardiomyopathies (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy and myocarditis).
