Re: Subclinical thyroid dysfunction and mortality in type 2 diabetes
Although there are inconsistencies between studies, available evidence suggests that subclinical hypothyroidism1 and subclinical hyperthyroidism2 increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and death in the general population. There are, however, few diabetes-specific data. In a study of 382 women with type 2 diabetes from the Fremantle Diabetes Study (FDS), of whom 29.6% died during a mean nine-year follow-up, we found no relationship between subclinical hypothyroidism and death (CVD or all-cause), but there was a suggestion that subclinical hyperthyroidism increased all-cause mortality.
