Brain-shift compensation using intraoperative ultrasound and constraint-based biomechanical simulation

During brain tumor surgery, accurate localization of the brain tumor is essential to both ensure its total resection and reduce the morbidity of surrounding healthy tissues. Images of the patient ’s brain are thus acquired prior to surgery and used by neuronavigation systems to assist the surgeon. However, due to the intraoperative deformation of soft tissues, called ”brain-shift”, these images no longer correspond to brain morphology of the patient throughout the entire procedure.
