Editorial Commentary: Atrial fibrillation: Challenges and opportunities

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia requiring treatment, and AF is currently a global public health problem linked to an aging population. There have been significant advances in recent years in understanding the mechanisms of AF and treatment of patients with AF. It has become evident that in addition to ageing, genetic, environmental, and various cardiac and non-cardiac factors contribute to onset of AF. Catheter ablation techniques have significantly reduced the symptoms of specific groups of patients with AF and randomized controlled trials with novel anticoagulants (NOAC) have substantially decreased the bleeding complications of patients with AF.
