"When you hear hoofbeats, think of horses, not zebras. ” This advice is commonly given to medical trainees, especially when making esoteric, textbook diagnoses and missing more obvious, common diagnoses. However, the reverse is also true for diagnosticians. While calculations of probability may argue otherwise, the improbable diagnoses must at least b e considered until the findings in any given case rule them out.
