We know from a series of reports into the NHS, including Francis, Keogh, Berwick and Barnes, that professional expertise alone is not sufficient to ensure we deliver good care. It is not just about what we do, but how we do our work that matters. This is why the 6C’s initiative is being rolled out across all the professional groups of the NHS and Healthcare Scientists should embrace this wholeheartedly. Whether working in a patient facing role or a few steps removed, our duty remains to ensure that our work is patient focused and shaped to their needs. That’s why I was keen to ensure that the voice of healthcare science was heard strongly in the multi-professional 6C’s video that was filmed at Healthcare Innovation Expo earlier this Spring. And why Professor Juliet Beal was able to speak so powerfully about what the 6C’s mean to healthcare science at the #LTO14 conference last month. Developing these professional skills must go hand in hand with our professional service standards. As CSO, I have sponsored Improving Quality in Physiological Services which has driven forward Physiological Sciences services and now Improving Clinical Engineering and Physical Science Services being developed by the Academy for Healthcare Science and Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine.
