Hypercognitive seizures − Proposal of a new term for the phenomenon forced thinking in epilepsy

The primary aim of this work is to review the available literature on forced thinking and evaluate its localizing information associated to a recently published series of patients in whom related phenomena were induced by electrical brain stimulation (Koubeissi et al., 2016). In this process we concluded that the term forced thinking was used heterogeneously in the literature, finally prompting the suggestion of a new term. In association with the current operational classification of seizure terms, we suggest the term hypercognitive seizure to describe an ictal mental experience of intrusive thoughts, ideas, or words.
