No action likely on slaughter without stunning

IN her Comment on the content of the manifestos of the political parties (VR, May 27 2017, vol 180, p 506), Adele Waters notes that no political party proposes to end slaughter without stunning and suggests that the alternative of a requirement to label meat from such slaughter could be more easily achieved post-Brexit. It is true that it is always easier for one country to take a decision than to come an agreement between 28 countries. However, it should be realised that the UK has always led the opposition at European level to proposals to take any action on slaughter without stunning. The UK Commissioner blocked a draft proposal by Commission staff in 1993 that would have banned slaughter without stunning, and the UK government has consistently opposed suggestions that meat from animals not stunned before slaughter should be labelled.
