Understanding and Improving Surgical Hand Hygiene Compliance

Hand hygiene compliance rates are commonly absent from health care facilities ’ compliance statistics because an accurate depiction of hand hygiene performance is difficult to determine. Data collection is influenced by the observers’ presence (if recognized) and whether the observer documents all misses and completions appropriately. The Centers for Disease Control and P revention reports that the average rate of health care worker compliance with hand hygiene guidelines ranges from 40% to 60%.1 Many facilities report perfect performance, however.
