Validation of a quick screening instrument for measuring fear of hypoglycaemia in persons with diabetes

Fear of hypoglycaemia (FoH) presents in 10 –25% of persons with diabetes [1] and has a negative impact on well-being, diabetes self-management and metabolic control [2,3]. Despite improvements in diabetes treatment [4,5], FoH remains a major barrier in achieving glycaemic control and good quality of life. In medical practice, the extensive FoH lists are insufficiently used outside research settings and hypoglycaemias are both underreported and not asked for [6]. This could be bypassed by a quick and practical screening procedure in busy clinics [7].
