15 years of blogging – a retrospective

May 19th, 2002 I wrote my first blog post.  Blogging had just become an interesting method for expressing opinions. Early in my blogging career I compared blogging to standing on a soap box in Hyde Park.  Bloggers had (and have) the freedom to express opinions.  Readers have the opportunity to comment, ignore or just read. I started blogging to “cure” writer’s block.  Blogging allowed me to try out ideas.  Some blog posts stimulated academic articles and research. One particular post, from September 2002, has led to my recent research into Fusobacterium necrophorum pharyngitis: Some sore throats are VERY serious Over the years, I blog less often, probably because of twitter.  Nonetheless I continue to consider many ideas as blog worthy. Blogging did help my writing.  Blogging helped me think through issues, because writing about an issue requires serious thinking. Over these years I have had over 3 million reads.  My twitter followers exceed 3,000. Blogging remains fun.  Medicine, the science, requires exploring ideas.  Much changes in medical science every year.  As a physician I must disrespect “authority” and respect the data. As a blogger I hope that I have followed in the footsteps of the little boy who saw that the Emperor had no Clothes.  If I have made you think; when I make you think; that makes me proud. I plan to continue blogging, here and elsewhere.  Several announcements related to that may appear here in the next month...
