The present discussion describes the state of academic medicine in the United States (US) at the turn of the 20th century followed by the radical changes in education and investigative medicine. As might be immediately recognized, these dramatic academic changes were associated with the remarkable development in formal medical education and the research enterprise. The author ′s personal clinical investigative experiences were influenced importantly by academic and intellectual relationships with his role models.
