The conference season

It is the first of the two annual conference seasons. Like many aspects of 21st century life, we are inundated with choices of conferences and meetings, which appear to be of relevance to our clinical practices, educational and research interests. I know many of the UK readership have opted for the Annual TV Society meeting. After a number of years based in Kettering, this year it moved to the University at York. I am pleased to report there was an encouraging number of delegates, including many from the local Yorkshire region, who were treated to an excellent mix of speakers from a diverse range of disciplines. As an example, I was fascinated to hear of the differences between the factors associated with “Wellbeing” and “Quality of Life” as applied to wound care, as revealed by Dr Penney Upton (Worcester). In addition, Professors Val Edwards-Jones and Keith Cutting (Manchester and Hertfordshire, respectively) provided an excellent overview of how damaging biofilms can be when they invade a wound bed. This meeting was followed by the 2nd European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel focus meeting under the theme “Skin Health and the Microclimate” which I hosted in Southampton. Unfortunately, we found it competing at the same time with British Society of Dermatology, and thus it was not easy to predict the number of delegates it would attract.
