Choosing Wisely and Preoperative Hemoglobin A1c Testing: What Should It Mean?

(Abstracted from Can J Anaesth, 63(12):1307–1313, 2016) To promote high-value care and improved use of health system resources, the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society and Choosing Wisely Canada recommended that routine preoperative testing should be avoided in surgical populations when the results would be unbeneficial or when testing might lead to complications secondary to false-positive results. These recommendations include not performing preoperative serum biochemistry tests (including blood glucose assays) in asymptomatic patients undergoing low-risk, noncardiac surgery.
